Parma, 15 April 2021 – Parma have emerged victorious six times away to Cagliari in the league, with their biggest success coming on Sunday 12 December 1993, when they ran out 4-0 winners in Sardinia.

As we wait for the teams to meet at 20:45 CEST on Saturday 17 April, this week’s Crociati column looks back at that resounding victory over 27 years ago.

It was a season that saw Parma win the European Super Cup and make the European Cup Winners’ Cup final for the second consecutive campaign.

Nevio Scala’s lads were fighting it out in the upper echelons of the Serie A table, while Cagliari were looking to stave off relegation.

That evening, our three big attacking weapons all started and ultimately condemned the Rossoblù to defeat.

The hosts held out until just before the half-time whistle. Indeed, Faustino Asprilla struck the first blow in the 40th minute.

After being picked out by Gianfranco Zola, who had got the better of several opposition players with some excellent dribbling, Tino unleashed a precise right-footed shot that gave the Crociati the lead (0-1).

Parma would build on this after the restart, with Alessandro Melli bagging a brace in the second half.

Sandrino doubled the Ducali’s advantage on the 65-minute mark, when he fired home from inside the box after wonderful work by Asprilla to bring about the chance (0-2).

Seven minutes later, Melli scored his second and Parma’s third, making the most of Marco Sanna’s mistake and lashing past goalkeeper Valerio Fiori on the volley (0-3).

Then, with 83 minutes on the clock, Zola produced a masterpiece: his free kick from outside the area flew into the top corner to Fiori’s left to add the cherry on the cake (0-4).

A fantastic night on the pitch was spoiled somewhat by what happened off it after the game, with two Curva Nord supporters injuring themselves during the celebrations and remaining in hospital for several days.

The support given to them by Cagliari supporters led to a strong relationship being formed between the ultras of the two fanbases.
