Genoa, 22 May 2021 – Following the match tonight against Sampdoria, Coach D’Aversa offered his thoughts:
“We have had some problems, the lads have often performed well, including in the first half tonight even though Quagliarella had given Sampdoria the advantage. The mistakes we made were due to inexperience, on many occasions we’ve found ourselves leading by one or two goals and we weren’t able to secure the result. Compared to other years, this team has lost that sense of hunger that makes it difficult for the opponents to score, while we were also the worst defence. Everything happened to us this year, even with injuries; this also happened in the past, but we didn’t create excuses. Performances were there but the regret is that they haven’t been transformed into positive results”.
“The Cagliari match could have made us face into the rest of the season differently; We’ve had many opportunities, an error of inexperience against Sassuolo is the one that influenced the rest of the season the most. Counting the games up to 70 minutes we’d be in a different situation, but from the 70th minute onwards we’ve thrown away several points and it’s not a matter of bad luck, these were shortcomings. Our regret is not being able to round off a journey that began years ago in Serie D. Everyone will have to think about their mistakes and take lessons from the experience. The future? I have a one-year contract, but this doesn’t mean much, we’ll have to discuss things with the Club. On a human level, after coming last in the table, there is more regret about how this season ended”.
“There’s no guarantee that if I had started the season from the beginning that maybe things would have gone differently, all the teams that made changes in the summer had difficulties post Covid due to not being able to work as they usually would. Having said this, I’m not going to disrespect the previous group because since my return I have done worse. There are no young and old players, there are types: strong players and not strong. Parma are an important club, the future with this President is bright, the club is growing and very few others have our potential. The Serie B championship is very difficult, you can get a good mix, but if a player is strong, he plays, regardless of age”.
