Parma, 19 February 2022 – Coach Iachini addressed the media in the press room at the Tardini following his team’s defeat to Ternana (2-3).

“We told ourselves to go on the attack early on. We managed this but misread two balls in behind and were punished. We then told ourselves to continue playing as we’d prepared after going 2-0 down. Today, we had 26 shots on goal and only needed one more of those to find the net. We had many opportunities to take the lead and it would have been important for us psychologically to make the most of the situations we created. We didn’t do this and, at the interval, we told ourselves to restart strong but instead turned back with our first spell of possession and conceded the goal from a corner where the marking was poor. We continued to attack, progressing well into our opponent’s area, but individual errors which are proving costly. I understand that having matches in quick succession can lead to less composure; otherwise, anything we create in the game will be for nothing. We must recognise our errors during the game. We always have the ability to score goals, but you have to be more clinical. There are regrets, but I can’t say that the boys aren’t committed. After going behind, we had the patience to bounce back and were dangerous, but it wasn’t enough; I can only apologise to the fans.

“We’ve encountered several setbacks, but we have to look forward, own our mistakes and improve on this, focusing on one game at a time. This is a team that trains well and works hard on both sides of the game, so this is unusual. I’m not going to point fingers, but we have to keep trying to play well and, if we also display the right mentality and attitude, the wins will come. There is no other option than to give everything, we have to be more careful at the back and better up front. I’ve never experienced a match like this, where we’ve had 26 shots on goal and been unable to win the game. That’s just the way it is right now, but we must persist.

“Dennis Man actually played well today and we didn’t struggle nearly as much down his side of the pitch. He is growing well into that position and he can be a real advantage for us. We want to play with a high press, but we conceded goals on two balls played forward. We must improve this aspect of our game but without neglecting the idea that we’re carrying forward.

“We posed the greater attacking threat in the game. We didn’t concede because we lost the ball at the back, we simply misread two balls played forward. In the second half, a few balls were going astray, so I made the changes and then came the corner. Sometimes in football when you make a mistake you aren’t always punished, but sometimes you are. It’s not like they didn’t make mistakes either, as we managed 26 shots. We have to be more clinical because then this changes the game on a tactical level too.

“We have to persist. I’ve encountered complicated situations like this before. Despite our mistakes, I am seeing growth. We need to be more focused and can’t give up on where we want to get to. In the last few weeks, I’ve liked what I’ve seen but results have been disappointing; regardless of the errors we have been making which have caused us to drop points, I’ve been happy with the team we are turning into. We’ve created a lot, causing problems for our opponents, but we must be more clinical in front of goal. We’ll be perfect when we can do both parts of the game well.”
