A prolific forward with a great nose for goals, Abel Balbo grew up as a footballer in Argentina, taking his first steps in professional football in the colours of Newell’s Old Boys and River Plate.

He was brought to Italy in 1989 by Udinese, the team with which he was crowned top scorer of the 1990/91 Serie B championship. After five years at Roma, he came to Parma in the 1998/99 season.

In his only season with the Gialloblù, he managed to play a starring role in the Coppa Italia and UEFA Cup victories.
Over the course of his career, he also collected 37 caps and eleven goals with the Argentinian national team, coming second at the 1990 World Cup in Italy and third at the 1989 Copa América. In 2003 he retired from football, starting his career as a coach.
