He made his debut in the top division of Brazilian football in 1994, playing for Vitória. After three seasons with the Rossoneri, he moved to Palmeiras, a team with whom he totally devoted himself, winning the Paulista Championship, the Rio-San Paolo Tournament, the Brazilian Cup, the Mercosur Cup, and the Copa Libertadores. After being noticed by the club’s scouts, he was bought by Parma in January 2000.
In his 4 years with the Gialloblù, Jùnior carved out an important role for himself thanks to his undisputed athletic skills and technical ability. On May 10, 2002, it was his goal that won the Coppa Italia in the match at the Tardini against Juventus. Additionally, he also became a world champion just a few months later, with Brazil at the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan.
After a brief spell at Siena in 2004, he returned to play in Brazil, before retiring from football in 2010.
