He began his footballing career at Željezničar in Sarajevo, where he made his debut in professional football before joining Dinamo Zagreb in 1992. After spells at Sporting Gijón, Benfica and Club Brugge, he was signed by Parma in 1996.
During his four seasons with the Gialloblù, he played mostly as an attacking midfielder, first under Ancelotti and then Malesani. He scored his first Parma goal in a 1-0 win against AC Milan at San Siro in 1996/97. He ended his four-year stint with the Ducali with 24 goals for the Club.
In the 1998/99 season, he was a member of that Parma squad that surged to three cup titles in just 100 days: Coppa Italia, UEFA Cup and the Italian Supercup. In 2000, he joined Chelsea, where he would end his playing career four years later.
He played for Croatia between 1995 and 2003, making 49 appearances and winning the bronze medal at France ’98.
