Having begun his footballing career at home, with Rijeka, he arrived in Serie A in 1999, playing for Venezia, scoring his first goal in the top flight against Parma.
Between 2000 and 2006, Budan wore several jerseys, including that of Atalanta, where his eleven goals helped them to achieve promotion to Serie A.
In 2006 he was sent on loan to Parma: His first season with the Crociati would be one of the most important of his career, in terms of consistency and performances.
With 16 goals that season (13 in the league and three in the UEFA Cup), paired with Giuseppe Rossi and led by coach Claudio Ranieri, he dragged Parma to safety. His second season, albeit affected by injuries, ended with seven goals, which was enough to earn him a call-up to the Croatian squad for the 2008 European Championships.
After a few years with Palermo and Cesena, he ended his playing career in 2013 at Atalanta, before embarking on a coaching career.

He joined Parma in the summer of 1999 and immediately took to the pitch as a starter alongside Crespo as the Crociati won the Supercoppa Italiana thanks to a 2-1 victory over AC Milan. In his third season at the Gialloblù, he finished fourth in the Serie A scoring charts thanks to a 20-goal haul, while he also played a vital role in Parma’s Coppa Italia triumph – his second trophy as a Crociati player.
After various spells at clubs in Italy (Juventus, Genoa and Bologna) and abroad (Valencia, Monaco and Montréal Impact), he hung up his playing boots in 2014 and embarked on a career as a sporting director.

He arrived to Parma in 1982, swiftly earning the affection of the Curva Nord, thanks to his goal scoring ability and irrepressible spirit of celebration. It was in that season, during the home match against Carrarese to be precise, that this spirit showed its true colours: celebrating a goal scored, he hung from the wire mesh which separates the spectating fans from the pitch. Not able to support the weight of the celebrating fans, the mesh broke, earning him the nickname the “bomber della ramata”.
His second Crociati season is one to be remembered: he scored 17 goals, promoting the team to Serie B.
In the Parma squad, he has made the most appearances of his career, and he has worn the Crociati kit in more than 100 fixtures.
An attacker of indisputable technical talent, he never scored in the same way, the most memorable being the free kicks in the Derbys against Bologna and Reggiana, which baptised him as the unquestionable idol of Crociati fans.
